Troubleshooting Guide

Last Updated: July 12, 2026

Most operational minor issues with your custom retractable screens can be quickly resolved at home without any specialized technical skills. Before reaching out to our support team, please consult this step-by-step DIY troubleshooting guide to get your screen working smoothly again.

🛠️ Common Issues & Solutions

1. The screen feels stiff, heavy, or difficult to slide.

  • Likely Cause A: Debris, pet hair, dirt, or small pebbles have accumulated inside the bottom floor track, creating friction.

    • Solution: Fully retract the screen. Use a vacuum cleaner with a narrow crevice tool or soft brush attachment to clear the entire length of the bottom and top tracks. Wipe it clean with a damp microfiber cloth.

  • Likely Cause B: The track lacks proper dry lubrication after heavy seasonal use.

    • Solution: Clean the tracks thoroughly, then spray a light layer of Dry Silicone-Based Lubricant Spray into both the top and bottom channels. Slide the screen back and forth 3–5 times to distribute it. (Do NOT use wet lubricants like WD-40 or heavy grease, as they attract dirt).

  • Likely Cause C: The door frame has shifted slightly, or the screen frame was installed slightly out of square (unlevel).

    • Solution: Place a spirit level against the vertical screen cassette and side tracks. If the frame is twisted or leaning, loosen the mounting screws slightly, adjust the frame back to perfect square, and re-tighten.

2. The mesh is blowing out of the tracks or sagging.

  • Likely Cause A: Sudden high wind gusts or a pet leaning against the flat mesh has pushed it out of its retaining channel.

    • Solution: Retract the screen completely back into its aluminum cassette housing. Slowly draw the handle out again. Our mesh retention systems are designed to self-reset automatically when fully retracted.

  • Likely Cause B (For Pleated/Accordion Screens): The internal tension cords have become slack or loose over time.

    • Solution: Locate the tension adjustment blocks (usually found inside the vertical side receiver profile or near the corners of the frame). Carefully tighten or adjust the tensioning screws according to your original installation manual to restore tautness to the guide cords.

3. The screen makes a squeaking or friction noise when operating.

  • Likely Cause A: The internal spring tension component (for Roller screens) or the nylon gliders (for Pleated screens) are rubbing against a dry surface.

    • Solution: Apply dry silicone spray directly to the track gliders and where the mesh exits the main aluminum housing cassette.

  • Likely Cause B: The bottom track is catching on an uneven floor surface, causing the handle bar to drag.

    • Solution: Ensure the floor track is perfectly flat and flush against the ground. If it is bending upward due to uneven flooring, shim the track underneath to make it level.

4. The screen won't retract all the way back into the cassette (Roller Screens).

  • Likely Cause A: The mesh was rolled up while wet or damp, causing the layers to stick together or bunch up inside the housing.

    • Solution: Gently pull the screen out completely. Inspect the mesh for wrinkles or stuck debris. Let it air-dry completely, then guide it slowly back into the cassette by hand to ensure a clean, parallel roll.

  • Likely Cause B: The internal spring tension has weakened over time.

    • Solution: The spring tension can be re-tensioned. Please contact our support team at info@retractscreens.com to request the specific Spring Re-tensioning Video Guide for your exact product model.

5. Pleated mesh folds are uneven or bundling up at the bottom.

  • Likely Cause: The top and bottom of the handle bar are moving at different speeds, causing the accordion pleats to misalign.

    • Solution: Hold the middle of the handle bar and push it fully into the closed (retracted) position. Press firmly to ensure all pleats compress neatly together. This recalibrates the accordion folding memory. Always operate the screen by holding the handle near the center rather than pulling exclusively from the very top or bottom.
